3/26 update

Redhawks,

You can find the meet results from this week at http://results.runnercard.com/Results/results.jsp?meetid=1003934

Thank you to all of you who came to support your teammates, especially if you were not competing. Well done to those who competed, we had tons of personal bests, all-time marks, and a new school record in the girls 4x200m relay!

You can find the team performance lists at the links above, called 2022 performance lists, and you can see the best marks all-time at BHS above on the all-time lists.

Practices this week

Monday is an "early out" day again, so we will begin practice, for everyone, at 12:30 PM.

Meet on Wednesday

We will be hosting a JV meet on Wednesday at 3 PM with Woods Cross. The order of events can be found here.

Basically anyone who competed in multiple events this past week probably won't be competing this week, but there will be some exceptions to that, particularly in the field events. Talk to your coaches to see if you will be competing or not. Everyone who didn't compete this week should definitely compete on Wednesday. We won't have a meet open to everyone again until APRIL 21, which is a long time from now.

All of you who are in the class will be required to be at the meet the entire time, and roll will be taken at the end. Everyone will be expected to help in some capacity.

We will be taking a team yearbook photo on Wednesday at 2:40 behind the fieldhouse in the amphitheater. Please do not be late, this needs to go quickly so the meet can start on time. Wear your uniform. If you do not bring your uniform you won’t be in the photo. Don’t just wear a red shirt, bring your uniform. You need it for the meet tomorrow anyway, so I believe in you.

Registering for events on Wednesday will be done in person at the starting line. Coaches Laura and Lake will be splitting that duty, so look for them.

We need all of your help managing the meet . I am currently home with flu-like symptoms and it is likely that I will not be there, which means we need your help all the more – listen to your coaches and do what they ask.

Thanks for all your hard work, looking forward to a great week.

3/20 Update

Rehawks,

Results from last week: http://results.runnercard.com/Results/results.jsp?meetid=1004055 On the left side you can select the different events to see your mark.

Well done to those who came and were able to compete at the meet, it was a lot of fun having such a big group determined to work hard. We had a solid week, but we need to be better if we are going to have a shot at winning a region title in May. We must be more consistent in our training - missing practices needs to become a very rare exception rather than a common occurrence (those of you who have spoken with me about your schedule with other sports/commitments, this doesn't apply to you). For the most part, most aren't missing practices, but it still needs to become even more rare.

Practices this week

Monday is an "early out" day, so we will begin practice, for everyone, at 12:30 PM.

Tuesday will be a normal B day, so we will start promptly at 2:40.

Meet at Syracuse Wednesday/Thursday

Wednesday and Thursday we will be having a two-day meet at Syracuse. This meet only allows us a certain number of entries, so we won't be able to enter everyone into this meet. However, we would still like everyone to come and support, and I am going to try to order two busses so we have plenty of space for everyone to come. Entries for the meet will be finalized after practice tomorrow, so make sure you are there. The schedule for the meet can be found below. Bus departure and school excuse time is TBD.

3/13 update

Redhawks,

Our first meet is upon us, and I'm looking forward to seeing you compete. I've really enjoyed these first two weeks, more than usual, because of the caliber of kids coming out and because of the coaches we are working with - they, and you, have all made my job easier and more enjoyable.  I've also been very pleased with the turnout. We had more people at Thursday's and Friday's practices than any previously, which is a good thing for the team, as long as we can make that continue.

Practice Information

Practices this week should all be outside on the track. On A days, those not in the class, should come up as quickly as possible to get warmed up and join the workout. On B days we will begin at 2:40. With no school on Friday, we may hold an unofficial practice in the afternoon, but that is tbd.

Meet Information

Our first meet is on Wednesday at Bonneville High School. The meet will begin at 3:30 PM. It generally lasts a couple of hours. The bus will leave at 1:30 PM - so you will be excused at 1:15 to get on the bus. If the bus time changes I will send an email out, and hopefully have it announced. It sometimes gets changed. You must ride the bus to the meet, and you can only ride home with a parent/guardian - not your friend's parent/guardian, only yours.

In order to get on the bus you must have COMPLETED registration on register my athlete. If it is not complete, you cannot go. It tells you on there if any parts are still incomplete, so double check it today.

We also need to register each individual online for the meet, which can be rather cumbersome at this stage of the season due to uncertainty of events. Here's what I need from you: if you cannot go to the meet, and you already know that, please reply to this email saying you can't go, so I don't register you.

Sprinters should plan on running the 100m, 200m (if not doing the open 400m) and the 400m - we need to learn where each of your fitness level is for that event. However, most of you will not be the open 400m. Some of you will want to run the open 400, so we'll put you in it, and some of you may prefer just do the 100m and 200m, which is fine this time, because we are going to enter everyone into a 4x400m relay at the end of the meet (exception: throwers). The 4x400m relay is the final event of the day, and we are going to have about 15 teams (give or take a few) and all runners will be placed on a team and the coaches will do our best to time each of you in your leg of the relay.

Distance runners should plan on the mile, 800, and 4x400 at the end, although we'll have to talk about that tomorrow at practice.

Throwers will be entered into the throws that they've practiced. Jumpers, if we are able to practice the jumps on Monday and Tuesday, will be permitted to jump - we may have to hold off on high jump at the moment though; that is tbd.

Uniforms

Finally, we will be distributing uniforms on Monday, so make sure you are at practice. Those of you who did XC, and were on the JV xc team, please bring your uniforms, to turn them in, and I'll issue you a different one. We have two types of uniforms, and anyone who is potentially going to be running in a relay at the larger meets must have the same uniform, so I need to make sure I have a few of those stashed away to give to those kids who end up on a relay team. That could be you, but due to the uncertainty I need to make sure I have enough for future meets.

Interesting Information

If you, like me, know people who constantly tell you that your knees will go bad from running, you can use this article to share some knowledge. Fun fact: the average American's knees fail more often than those who run. https://www.outsideonline.com/health/running/runners-knee-cartilage-study-2020/

For those who were wondering about static stretching and how it affects performance before competition, and how static flexibility affects performance: https://www.outsideonline.com/health/training-performance/case-against-stretching-flexibility-research/

Here is some information that our trainer presented to us on preventing and healing shin-splints.

3/6 update

Redhawks,

We had a solid first week of the season, and we are excited about who we have out for the team. I am happy about all the new faces - if you have not done track with us before here at Bountiful, I'm glad you are here now and I hope you enjoy it. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

Our focus will always be on making daily improvements. We have 5 days of practices ahead of us this week, let's use them wisely. The expectation is that you come to practice everyday, with exceptions being communicated with your coach prior.

To no one's surprise, the weather this weeks doesn't look like it will be as clear as it was this past week. We will be getting creative with how and where we work out this week, so come to practice each day prepared to practice both inside and outside. Bring warm/waterproof clothes just in case. The location of practice will default to outside, but will move to the fieldhouse balconies if the track is unfit for foot traffic. I will also post here if we are going to move inside rather than be outside. The good thing about less than ideal weather is that it forces us to become more mentally tough.

Reminder, you must finish registration on regsitermyathlete.com before you can compete, and you won't be able to practice if it is not complete by 3/15.

If you have any questions please let me know.
