4/24 update

Redhawks,

Thank you for all of your help on Wednesday hosting the junior high meet. It was a ton of work, but went extremely smoothly because we had so much help. Thank you to those who carried heavy loads to make sure the meet went well.

Results for the meet this past Thursday are finally posted here

The Woods Cross invitational will be at 3:00 PM. Those competing who aren't in the class will be excused at 2:10. Entries for the meet can be found here. There have been a few adjustments.

On Thursday we will be going up to Box Elder for a JV meet. Anyone not entered into the Davis Invitational will be eligible to compete there. The bus will leave at 1:30 PM, and you will be excused at 1:15 PM.

The Davis invitational will be on Saturday at Davis High School. The information for the meet can be found here.

It is a somewhat complicated meet. Basically they allow a certain number of people for each event. Basically everyone is entered, and then they make the cut off for each event after they reach their maximum number, so the more fast times that are entered, the harder it is to be accepted. They send out who makes it on Wednesday or Thursday. I will have an idea of who will and won't make it, but I can't be for sure.

Furthermore, this is managed like 2 different meets. In the afternoon, they have a "invite" section for the fastest runners of each event. During the morning hours, everyone else gets to run in the "open" section. It is possible that you get accepted into both sections, for different events.

I know it is a bit complicated, so please let me know if you have any questions.

4/17 update

Redhawks,

We have a very eventful week ahead of us so please read carefully.

On Monday we have early out/aspire testing (so many of you won't even be at school), so we will be practicing at 12:30 PM at the track.

Tuesday will be a normal A-day.

Wednesday we will be hosting a Junior High Meet. Everyone is expected to help - those of you in the class will have most of your grade determined on you being at the meet the entire time, until you are excused by me (Coach Jacobson, not another coach, as I am the teacher of the class). You will all have an assignment at the meet, and the details will be explained to you prior. You are expected to stay at your assigned area, and not be wandering off. With all of your help we will host an efficient and fun meet, and be out of there at a reasonable hour.

Thursday our JV team will be competing at Viewmont (this means everyone not competing at WX on Friday in the Invitational). There won't be a bus to the meet. You will be excused a few minutes early so you can get out of the parking lot. I will sign people up for this meet online, so please let me know ASAP if you cannot attend.

On Friday the varsity team will be competing at Woods Cross. There won't be a bus to this meet. You will be excused a few minutes early so you can get out of the parking lot. You will be excused a few minutes early so you can get out of the parking lot. I will sign people up for this meet online, so please let me know ASAP if you cannot attend.

If you have any questions about what is ahead, please let me know.

4/10 update

Redhawks,

I hope you all had an excellent spring break. Now is when the season really ramps up and truly gets fun. I hope you're ready to work.

This Thursday we will be racing at WX in a "relay meet". Essentially we will compete in a bunch of relays with the goal of hitting the state qualifying times so we don't have to attempt to qualify them at the region championship in May, and we can focus on winning/qualifying individuals. So, we really need everyone there. Some of you will be entered in some of the "odd" relays (the ones not in bold aren't competed at region or state, and are more just for the competition/experience), for the experience, and some of you will be in the few individual events which are listed below.

Practices will be as usual this week, rain or shine, so be prepared with the proper gear depending on weather.

Now is the time that we really start ramping up, and it is also the time that a number of kids start to lose motivation, and even consider quitting. If you are in that category, come talk to me, and we can see what we can do to help you. Obviously we want all of you to stick with it, and most times we can work through some of the conflicts. If we are going to win a region championship in May, it will be all hand on deck.

You can find the order of events for Thursday below.

If you have any questions please let me know.

4/3 update - Spring break

Redhawks,

I hope you all enjoy a very well deserved break from the regular grind of school. Below are a few workout suggestions for you during the break. If you're out of town, bring a parent with you to run - running in new places is a great way to feel refreshed and tour new areas (this is assuming you are in a safe place, of course). Otherwise, if you're in a hotel or something, go hit the treadmill in the gym.

We will have a practice for those who are in town on Friday at 10 AM at the track, otherwise, you are on your own. Get your running in, it'd be a shame to take a step back after a solid month of practicing.

Distance

Monday - distance run with more hills than normal, a fartlek, or hill repeats.

Tuesday - 40 minutes easy (only 30 for some of our newer runners)

Wednesday - 20 minute tempo with 10 minute warm up and cool down

Thursday - 30-40 minutes easy (20-30 for new runners)

Friday - Fast 400, Fast 400 (that includes about 1-2 minutes recovery between the 400s, and then full recovery between sets). 3-6 sets depending on feel and fitness. Second 400 should be at 800 or faster pace.

Saturday - Cross train or easy run

Sprints

These are just some ideas: 110 breakdown, stadiums, 8x50m sprints, 100m hill repeats, short rest 200s.

Throws

plyos, weights, short sprints, etc.
