4/25 update

 Braves,

The season is ramping up and we are only a few weeks away from the state meet. We have some exciting things ahead, and tough choices to make about entries and races over the next two weeks, so you need to be thinking about what events you'd like to do, and I can assure you that your coaches are doing the same.

This week we will be travelling with the JV group to Box Elder on Thursday, and then we have a meet at WX on Friday. Those who do not get in to WX will go to Box Elder, and those who get in to WX will not be going to Box Elder, unless you want to go to get a workout in.

We are limited by times and entry numbers for WX, so most of you will not be competing there. If you cannot run on one of those days, please let me know ASAP so I don't enter you, and I can put someone else in your place if possible.

I will send out an excuse time for the bus on Thursday once that is finalized. Both meets start at 3:30.

We might be getting covid tested on Thursday, more info to come.

4/18 update

 Braves,

Thank you for your help at the meet on Thursday. If you were there and helping, competing or not, it made the meet more enjoyable and go smoothly, so I thank you for your help.

We had some great marks on both Thursday and Saturday, and in truth I'm kind of sad that the Davis invite is over because it is such an enjoyable meet. Meet results from this week.

That being said, we have another fun one this week at Woods Cross on Thursday. Thursday will be the "Region 5 Relays" (schedule at the bottom). Not everyone will be able to compete, in fact we are very limited, but we still want everyone to come down and support. I have really appreciated the many of you who have come to support even without competing, and I know your teammates appreciate it too.

If you cannot be at the meet please let me know so we don't enter you into a relay or open event. That way we can put someone else in your place.

You can see that we have some different relays for this meet, which will make them a lot of fun.

This will be the only meet of the week, with nothing on the weekend.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

Coach Jacobson

Davis Invite info

Braves,

The Davis invitational is a complicated meet with two sections: open and invited. The open session has a lot more allowed entries, and the invited section is the top 8-16 runners from the entire meet. The open is during the morning, and invited goes in the afternoon. That is what that means when you see your name under those sections. I will be talking to each of those who were accepted into the meet today at practice, to determine which events you will do. I have to declare all the events we pull out of so other runners can get in. Under the ALTERNATE section of each event is the list of names who will get in if someone drops from the invited or open sections.

Accepted entries

Scroll down to the last page of the meet information (Davis meet information) to see the meet schedule, which will move ahead whenever possible, but that is rare. The meet info mentions a lunch, but my understanding is that has been cancelled. Spectators will be charged $5 (not 3) but I haven’t heard anything on limitations. Masks will be required per the UHSAA.

Let me know if you have any questions.

4/11 update

 Braves,

We had a great couple of days at the meets this week, with many personal bests. There were, of course, many who didn't have a PR this week. It is natural to feel disappointed when you don't hit your goals, if only due to the amount of time and effort you have put in to achieving those goals. Disappointment is a natural byproduct, but we cannot let that disappointment linger and affect us moving forward. Once again, the question is did you try as hard as you could this in the race/at the meet/during the week? If the answer is yes then you should feel proud of your accomplishments, and trust that the PRs will be coming, because they will if you continue to give your best. If the answer is no, well then let us find ways to work a little harder/better. It is the working to improve and reach goals that is valuable and determines success, not necessarily the goals themselves. Changing the definition of success to your effort rather than the outcome doesn't cheapen the experience or lesson accomplishments, in fact it is the opposite. The thrill of accomplishing a goal is only had because of the hard work. A goal reached without much effort is a cheap experience that isn't rewarding. On the other hand, reaching a goal for which you have worked hard is very rewarding precisely because of the work you put in. Ultimately the success, however, isn't reaching the goal, it's the process you took to reach that goal. I would rather work hard to reach a goal and fall short than not try at all and manage to reach a goal. Let us recognize the things we are doing well and the areas where we can improve.

The last bit on that, is to also find joy in your teammates' success. It is always easier to do when you are also doing well, but even when you're struggling, finding joy for your teammates will help you get back into your groove as well.

This week we have another meet here, on Thursday. We honestly need all the help we can get. Hosting is very stressful for me, and the more help we have the easier it is. Again, thank you to all who stayed and helped last week.

There is a meet on Saturday at Davis High. We will know what entries were accepted into the meet by tomorrow or Wednesday. Because it is so selective, most of you will not be racing on Saturday, but we encourage you to come support your teammates, like the many of you who came last Saturday, which was awesome.

We will be COVID tested on Thursday at 1 PM.

Meet results from last week can be found on our website (2021 meet results).

If you have any questions please let me know.

4/4 update

 Braves,

We have something of a complicated week ahead of us.

First, we will be hosting a meet on Thursday against Farmington, and it will only be us two schools, so it should be a quick meet. This is a class day, so we will be setting up for the meet during the class. All class members will be required to stay until the end of the meet and help clean up, as part of your grade for the class. Check canvas  in the coming days for the assignment details. (This will happen again on Thursday 4/15, so prepare yourselves accordingly).

Not everyone will be competing in our home meet, which will primarily be for our JV runners. The Taylorsville invitational on Saturday will be for our varsity runners, and is a pretty much all day thing, depending on the events you are in. (The following week is the Davis Invitational, which will be even more difficult to qualify for, so we will have an even smaller group). Talk to your event coach/es to get an idea of if you will be competing at Taylorsville. If you absolutely cannot be to the meet on Saturday, please let me know Monday at practice so I can make sure not to enter you (we are charged per entry and prefer not to have money go to waste, if you can believe it). Please see the following link for meet information, order of events, and spectator information (tickets need to be purchased online for spectators). Taylorsville Invite Info

It is my understanding that we will be tested again for Covid-19 on Thursday and the usual time and place. I will let you know if that is NOT the case, but plan on it for now.

If you were not tested on the Thursday before Spring Break, you cannot practice until you get tested. I will not be entering anyone into Taylorsville who hasn't been tested by practice on Tuesday - otherwise you will have missed too many practices to compete. Info on make up tests can be found at the end.

If you haven't joined the "remind" class, please do so at the following link: track 2021 remind

Thanks,

Coach Jacobson
