1/30 update

Redhawks,

We had a solid day at WX for our time trial, with some seasonal bests (SB) and some PRs to boot. Consider that race a step in your fitness rather than a fitness test. This Friday we have an opportunity for to take another step at the Olympic Oval at the distance challenge.

If you'd like to compete at that event, you can register at milesplit Utah. You will need to create a free account, which took me all of 30 seconds, so I believe in you. You can see the time/event schedule, costs, etc. at the link above.

This week we will be practicing after school on Tuesday and Thursday, and during class on Monday/Wednesday/Friday. Those who show me they have signed up to race on Friday won't be working out, but you'll need to come to class for the whole time, unless a parent checks you out of school so you can get yourself together before the races (hint, hint).

Looking forward to another great week. See you Monday!

1/23 update

Redhawks,

Our season is off to a good start, with several of our athletes racing on Friday and getting in some good racing experience. We know what where we need to go, and we know how to get there. The first priority is being consistent. We need to be working hard/properly every day. Consistency is going to be the key. If we do that, then by the end of the season (May) we will be in prime position to reach our goals.

This week, the meet at Weber State has been cancelled. The fate of the remaining two meets is still tbd, but for now they are on.

However, instead of Weber State we will be holding a time trial at Woods Cross with their team and some from Viewmont. This will take place Friday at 3:30 PM at the Woods Cross Track. The events will be as follows: 1600, 400, 800, 200, 4x400

EVERYONE will be expected to race a 4x400, and the other events will be up to you in consultation with the coaches.

This week we will be practicing after school on Monday/Wednesday, and during class on Tuesday/Thursday. We will meet OUTSIDE for practices this week due to the warmer temperatures.

Looking forward to a great week.

1/16 update

Redhawks,

We have a short week ahead of us, and the schedule might get tinkered with a bit more, but here is what I know for now.

I recommend getting a workout in tomorrow. I advise what I call "cut down 200s". You'll run 600m sets, getting faster with each 200. The first 200 is around 3200-5k pace, then get 3-5 seconds faster each successive 200. Then jog 400m-600m recovery (very slow, so 3-5 minutes recovery) and go again. We'll do 3 sets and of it's too easy do 1-2 more.

A few things to know. First, the Simplot Games which were scheduled in Mid February have been cancelled. I know this is a disappointment to many of you, and for me too, but we'll just have to take our disappointments out on the track through workouts and races.

If you are interested in racing at BYU this weekend, here is the link which will give you all the info. There is a lot of info on there, so please read it carefully. Notice the registration instructions as well as the COVID protocol, including proof of vaccination or negative test.

If you do sign up, please email me which events so I can attempt to be there. For now I'm planning on going to see the mile on Saturday morning. Also, ENTER A TIME when you register, otherwise you will be placed in a heat of rookies. Enter your PR time or something close to it.

Let me know if you have any questions.
