3/13 update

Braves,

Our last week without a track meet this season was a fairly successful one, and we were able to put in some quality on the track, the roads, and the fields. Competition season is upon us so we have to make sure that we stay on top of our training and continue to improve as we begin the season. The first month of the season will be critical for our development in technique, fitness, strength, and speed. Come ready each day to get after it.

On Friday we held a time trial so we could get an idea of where we were at. The results of the trial say a variety of things and I want to reiterate what I said at the end of the time trial. I hope you remember your race(s) from Friday as we progress through the season. At the end of the year we will look back at that day we will see that we are different athletes, and a different team. The progress and improvement that we will see throughout the year is one of the most enjoyable aspects of being part of the track team. Let's continue to work together, support each other, and push each other so that we can be the best athletes and team that we can by May.

This week we will be issuing uniforms on Monday and Tuesday after practice, so don't leave without getting one. Uniforms can only be issued to athletes who have paid their fees - this can be done online at mydsd or in the office. Again, make sure you register at register my athlete and make sure you have a physical from this year. The paperwork for that can also be uploaded on to registermyathlete.

Thursday is our first meet, and it is a home meet. We will need the help of each athlete to make sure that the events run smoothly, and we hope each of you will get out and compete your best. More details will be given at practice about what to expect and what events we want you to do. We expect each team member to be at the meet until all the events have finished and we have cleaned up the facility. Plan on being there for the full time. These home meets are always fun and easy to run when everyone does their part.

We are very optimistic about what this team can do and we are excited for these upcoming two weeks leading up to spring break. Let me know if you have any questions.

Go Braves!

3/6 Update

Braves,

This week was extremely successful from my point of view, and I am very proud of the effort and consistency that was shown during week 1 of this season. As a coaching staff we feel very optimistic about this season, in part because of a core group of athletes who have come every day prepared to give their best effort. Across all events we had a few tough workouts but you kept the effort and commitment coming each day this week. It's that kind of determination that we will need for the next 12 weeks of the season if we are to be successful. Success is something that is created through consistent hard work, day after day, week after week, and month after month. Let's continue what we started last week into this coming week.

Coming up this week on Friday we are going to be doing a team time-trial, which will be like a mini meet. More details for the time trial will be given at practice. Expect the days leading up to the time trial to really push you and help you improve. One day in the middle of the week we will be handing out uniforms. On Monday I will be entering "fines" for each athlete so you can go in and pay the athletic fee in the office or online. I believe that the price the school sets is $90. After tomorrow morning that should be available to pay online.

Another reminder to go to register my athlete and register for track this season. Athletes who have not had a physical this school year will need to get that done and send the paper work to Coach Munk.

This is our last week of training without an official meet so we really need to take full advantage of that. I appreciate the effort this past week, so let's keep it going.

On our website I have added the state qualifying standards for each event so feel free to go on there and look at those to see what is required. Region qualifying is done a little differently, without a set mark - they take the top 20-30 athletes in the region in each event to compete at the region meet. To qualify for state you must either meet the standard or place in the top 4 at the region championships in May.

Feel free to contact me with any questions. We appreciate all you do.

Outdoor Track and Field 2016

Braves,

The outdoor season is here and we excited to get started. We were able to accomplish some good things as a team this winter in our indoor track season, but the best is yet to come. Just a few things to know before we begin next week.

We will be meeting for the first time this season on Monday, February 29th in the Library. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come. Invite your friends to come with you - the more the merrier. We have an awesome staff of coaches who will be working with us this year and we look forward to working with you all. Coaches Magalei, Jacobson, Munk, Wiley, and Kason will be with us.

The first practice will be Tuesday, March 1st so come prepared and ready to work out on the track. Unlike during the indoor season we will be meeting at 2:30.

We can have a successful season if we come with a positive attitude, ready to work hard. Let's have some fun this season as we work to improve.

2/21 update

Braves,

We had a successful short week and we were able to get outside on the track. That in itself is reason to celebrate. We can only hope that this warmer weather stays with us so we can continue to get quality work in on the track and on the hills.

A small group went up to the Simplot Games at Idaho State University this weekend and it was a successful and fun trip. I appreciate the guys who went for behaving well and competing with heart. We had a heavy race load for all five guys, but they all competed with everything they had. I hope that this trip continues to grow in the future so that more athletes can experience that environment, track, and team experience. Thank you to Bridger, Marsaylis, Noah, Hunter, and Marcus.

This week will be a good one leading into the outdoor season. I want to make this week one where we can get rest for some heavy legs, avoid impact on the legs, yet still increase strength. Here is what is planned: Monday we will go to the weight room as a team. Tuesday no practice. Wednesday we will do plyos (very limited running). Thursday we will do blocks and some hurdles. Friday no practice. Plan on meeting tomorrow at 2:45. Don't worry if you are inexperienced in the weight room. I will walk you through the techniques so there are no injuries.

I appreciate you all and for the work you have done this winter. Winter can be the most difficult time to motivate yourself (considering the cold and the lack of sunlight - both of which affect mood). Let's make this spring awesome together.

2/7 Super Bowl Day update

Braves,

We had a very productive off week. We had some good workouts in the halls and on the hills that was capped off with a pretty wild (and a little reckless) N64 challenge on Friday. It was a pretty fun event, and we're lucky no one got hurt by the table that crashed to the ground - the investigation is still pending on whose fault that was... probably mine. Thanks to MJ for saving the game system and my projector.

This week will be our last heavy week leading up to the Simplot Games next week, and then the outdoor season. Those who were invited to Simplot, please return your paper tomorrow with the events that you are interested in competing in, so we can make final decisions on who will be able to go.

This Friday is the distance challenge at the olympic oval. They compete the 400, 800, 1600, and 3200. I am not exactly sure the order of events yet, but I will send that information out either tomorrow or Tuesday. Let's make sure we do what we need to in the classroom, at practice, and away from the school in order to be successful in all our endeavors.

I appreciate the hard work we have been putting in as a team, let's keep it going, continue to have fun and improve.

Let's go Braves!
