Braves,
As a whole
we worked hard this week even with a couple of days of bad weather. In general
I was very impressed with the effort that was given during the meet on
Thursday. We appreciate all the help that was given to make it run smoothly.
With our small track it can be difficult to be efficient but you helped it go
well, so thank you. This meet was not about times and performances but about
how hard we worked in our races. There were a large number of kids who did a
bunch of events, and continued to get after it no matter the circumstances. Our
Friday practice was small in numbers but we had fun mixing up the workouts to
get some cardio while playing some games. Between the dance this weekend and it
being a Friday there were many people who missed without having let me or other
coaches know. I encourage those of you who did not do very many events or
missed on Friday, and could have done more, to rededicate yourselves this
coming week. The early weeks of the season are where we can improve our fitness
and speed, and it is so important to get after it in these small meets.
This
upcoming week is very busy. We the super meet on Tuesday and Wednesday at Davis
High, then a meet at Box Elder on Thursday. We will not practice next Friday
given that there is no school. The meet on Tuesday is girls only and Wednesday
boys only and they are by invitation only. We can only take a few athletes of
each event on T/W, but Thrusday we can take all who are eligible. Each meet
this week is going to be a great opportunity for us to improve and see where we
are now headed into spring break. We will let those athletes know who is going
to the Davis super meet by Monday evening (I know it is not a lot of notice but
that is the earliest we can finalize the entries).
Attached to
this email is a form for a clothing order. The clothing option is
explained on the form. Feel free to select all, some, or none of the products.
Any athlete (or parent) who wants something needs to return the form to me by
Wednesday 3/22. They will also need to pay for this in the office and bring the
receipt to me. Let me know if you have any questions about the items.
Last item:
each day I am impressed by different athletes on our team and the work that
they put in. Specifically, Friday’s practice was daunting for some coming back
from Thursday tired and sore, yet there they were ready to work. The distance
group in particular was on the track getting after it. I was impressed by how
many came ready to work on a day where it would have been easy to justify in
your mind to not work hard. Thursday I was impressed by the number of
individuals who kept entering events and were out on the track at the end
running a 4x400 as their 4th event of the day. Noah set a new PR in
a 400 by nearly 4 seconds as his last event. Marsaylis was worried about a
medley 400, but went out and improved on his time from minutes before in the
open. He showed another level of fitness when he went and ran a solid 200 a few
minutes later. Rachel anchored our 4x400 team which was full of girls
running their 4th event and afterwards looked like she wanted to
race them all again. Amelia ran an 800 and then a 400 within an hour- that is
one of the most difficult things to do. Some would call that crazy but it’s
exactly the attitude and heart that we are trying to build on our team. There
are many more examples, and we will see even more throughout the year. May we
all give the kind of effort that we can be proud of at the end of each day and
at the end of the season. We are building this team together; let’s keep it
going.
