Season Wrap

 Braves,

What an end to the year. There is a lot I would like to say on the matter, including a recap of the great things that you did this year, but I will save that for our team party this next week.

Some of our athletes are planning the get together - here is the information: Our end of year party will be Tuesday, 6 PM at Rocket Park (Tolman Park). We will be doing a potluck. Sign up for what you want to bring (so we don't end up with 10 people bringing watermelon) and come hang out with the team! We will be giving out some dundies and having a good time. Click here for the putlock sign up. We will have some end of season recognition at the party as well - I hope you all can make it.

The last few things that need to be addressed are the track class, uniforms, and upcoming cross country.

Class will still be held next Tuesday and Thursday (and the next Tuesday), but we will not be running. We will meet in my classroom at 12:50 (except the last week of school) and go from there. You do not need to change from your regular clothes.

Uniform tops can be purchased for $15. If you do not want to buy them you need to return them to me by class time on Tuesday. I need all the shorts returned. If you decide to buy the top, please pay in the office (track account) and bring me the receipt so I can mark you as having "returned" your uniform. I have to enter fines (today actually but I'm stalling) so please get them to me pronto.

All of you not involved in a summer/fall sport are encouraged and welcome to join us for summer XC and then the official season of XC in the fall. We are gearing up for a great season, with some great kids on the team and coaches helping, so I'm really looking forward to it. The time and place of our first meeting is still TBD, but I'm thinking next Friday around 1 PM. More info to come.

If you have any questions please let me know.

5/16 update

 Braves,

The state championships are on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Spectators will need to buy tickets in advance at this site (athletes will not need a ticket).

As of now we do not have a bus going to state, but that might change so I will keep you posted. The schedule of events can be found here but be sure to scroll down to page 3.

Thursday we will be headed up to JV region at Box Elder. Everyone who did not compete at state will be eligible to race there. I know that many of you have an orchestra conflict that evening, so transportation is an issue. The directive from the district is that you can ride home with your parent/guardian, but not with anyone else, so if you can only be there for the beginning and need to leave early, you'll need to arrange with a parent to make that happen. I know it is a long drive for a parent to make, there and back, for a race that is as short as 12 seconds, or as long as 8 minutes, but those are the rules as given to me. Obviously I'm hoping you all can make it, including those who run at state, to come and support, as it will be the last meet of the year- and for you seniors, the last high school meet ever.

We will be practicing as usual today for the last time this year. Be there to sharpen up before your events.

If you missed covid testing last week talk to me about times/places to go make it up.

Let me know if you have questions.

5/9 update

 Braves,

The region championships are on Wednesday and Thursday of this week at Farmington High. For lane events they will do a trials on Wednesday with the top 8 advancing to finals on Thursday. For distance events it will be a timed finals, meaning the top 8 score. Field events will be as usual, with the trials going first, and then the top 9 advance to finals immediately following the trials.

The top 4 of each final will qualify for the state championships next week (Tuesday/Wednesday at Davis High School - I didn't update that on the calendar until today but we have talked about it at length at practice. The state meet will begin at 2 PM each day - the state schedule can be found here but be sure to scroll down to the 5A-6A schedule).

We will be taking a bus to region, and all are encouraged to attend both days, whether racing or not, to support the team. An excuse time and bus departure time will be sent out tomorrow.

This meet is going to be a great opportunity for many of our athletes to qualify for state, so let's be ready to compete hard, and cheer on your teammates in their races. Because of entry limitations we will not be able to get everyone into the meet, but there is a JV region meet on Thursday of next week, the day after state. All who do not qualify for state will be eligible to race there.

5/1 update

 Braves,

I love this time of year because it is when the hard work from the winter and early spring begins to pay off. I updated the performance lists after the JV meet and most of the season's best marks came from that day. It will be similar when I complete the update after yesterday's meet. Shout out to Sarah for going under 8 in the mile; Andrew, Trevor, and Sam in the 800 for qualifying for BYU, and the first two turning around and running an awesome 4x400; Ethan for going under 2 minutes in the 800; Sebring for two PRs in the hurdles to qualify for BYU; Kali'i with the 4 ft pr in the shot; Draper for going under 11s in the 100m; Alyssa and Jaelyn for big PRs in the sprints on Thursday. And many more.

Again, PRs are fun, but they aren't the mark of success. The mark of success is doing the small things everyday to get better. If you consistently work hard and give your best effort physically and mentally then you will be successful no matter the outcomes. Are you doing the best you know how? If so, then you won't have any regrets.

The season is rapidly coming to a close, so please enjoy each practice and savor every opportunity to race.

This week we have a meet at Bonneville on Thursday, and then the BYU invitational on Friday/Saturday. Those going to BYU will not compete at Bonneville, and vice versa. The info for BYU can be found here. There are qualifying standards there so anyone who has qualified can go. For distance runners, in most cases, I don't recommend in competing in more than 1 event since we are turning around and racing at region the following week, so please talk to me about which event(s) you would like to run in. For sprinters and field events, I probably don't recommend 4 events, but 2-3 events is probably ok, depending on the event.

Registration is due on TUESDAY at 8 AM so I need to know by Monday if you would like to go. The ideal would be you reply to this email and let me know.

We have this week, region next week, and state/JV region the following week, and then the season is over. I can't believe how fast it has gone - thank you for making this an enjoyable year. Now let's make the most of the last 3 weeks.

4/25 update

 Braves,

The season is ramping up and we are only a few weeks away from the state meet. We have some exciting things ahead, and tough choices to make about entries and races over the next two weeks, so you need to be thinking about what events you'd like to do, and I can assure you that your coaches are doing the same.

This week we will be travelling with the JV group to Box Elder on Thursday, and then we have a meet at WX on Friday. Those who do not get in to WX will go to Box Elder, and those who get in to WX will not be going to Box Elder, unless you want to go to get a workout in.

We are limited by times and entry numbers for WX, so most of you will not be competing there. If you cannot run on one of those days, please let me know ASAP so I don't enter you, and I can put someone else in your place if possible.

I will send out an excuse time for the bus on Thursday once that is finalized. Both meets start at 3:30.

We might be getting covid tested on Thursday, more info to come.

4/18 update

 Braves,

Thank you for your help at the meet on Thursday. If you were there and helping, competing or not, it made the meet more enjoyable and go smoothly, so I thank you for your help.

We had some great marks on both Thursday and Saturday, and in truth I'm kind of sad that the Davis invite is over because it is such an enjoyable meet. Meet results from this week.

That being said, we have another fun one this week at Woods Cross on Thursday. Thursday will be the "Region 5 Relays" (schedule at the bottom). Not everyone will be able to compete, in fact we are very limited, but we still want everyone to come down and support. I have really appreciated the many of you who have come to support even without competing, and I know your teammates appreciate it too.

If you cannot be at the meet please let me know so we don't enter you into a relay or open event. That way we can put someone else in your place.

You can see that we have some different relays for this meet, which will make them a lot of fun.

This will be the only meet of the week, with nothing on the weekend.

If you have any further questions please let me know.

Davis Invite info

Braves,

The Davis invitational is a complicated meet with two sections: open and invited. The open session has a lot more allowed entries, and the invited section is the top 8-16 runners from the entire meet. The open is during the morning, and invited goes in the afternoon. That is what that means when you see your name under those sections. I will be talking to each of those who were accepted into the meet today at practice, to determine which events you will do. I have to declare all the events we pull out of so other runners can get in. Under the ALTERNATE section of each event is the list of names who will get in if someone drops from the invited or open sections.

Accepted entries

Scroll down to the last page of the meet information (Davis meet information) to see the meet schedule, which will move ahead whenever possible, but that is rare. The meet info mentions a lunch, but my understanding is that has been cancelled. Spectators will be charged $5 (not 3) but I haven’t heard anything on limitations. Masks will be required per the UHSAA.

Let me know if you have any questions.

4/11 update

 Braves,

We had a great couple of days at the meets this week, with many personal bests. There were, of course, many who didn't have a PR this week. It is natural to feel disappointed when you don't hit your goals, if only due to the amount of time and effort you have put in to achieving those goals. Disappointment is a natural byproduct, but we cannot let that disappointment linger and affect us moving forward. Once again, the question is did you try as hard as you could this in the race/at the meet/during the week? If the answer is yes then you should feel proud of your accomplishments, and trust that the PRs will be coming, because they will if you continue to give your best. If the answer is no, well then let us find ways to work a little harder/better. It is the working to improve and reach goals that is valuable and determines success, not necessarily the goals themselves. Changing the definition of success to your effort rather than the outcome doesn't cheapen the experience or lesson accomplishments, in fact it is the opposite. The thrill of accomplishing a goal is only had because of the hard work. A goal reached without much effort is a cheap experience that isn't rewarding. On the other hand, reaching a goal for which you have worked hard is very rewarding precisely because of the work you put in. Ultimately the success, however, isn't reaching the goal, it's the process you took to reach that goal. I would rather work hard to reach a goal and fall short than not try at all and manage to reach a goal. Let us recognize the things we are doing well and the areas where we can improve.

The last bit on that, is to also find joy in your teammates' success. It is always easier to do when you are also doing well, but even when you're struggling, finding joy for your teammates will help you get back into your groove as well.

This week we have another meet here, on Thursday. We honestly need all the help we can get. Hosting is very stressful for me, and the more help we have the easier it is. Again, thank you to all who stayed and helped last week.

There is a meet on Saturday at Davis High. We will know what entries were accepted into the meet by tomorrow or Wednesday. Because it is so selective, most of you will not be racing on Saturday, but we encourage you to come support your teammates, like the many of you who came last Saturday, which was awesome.

We will be COVID tested on Thursday at 1 PM.

Meet results from last week can be found on our website (2021 meet results).

If you have any questions please let me know.

4/4 update

 Braves,

We have something of a complicated week ahead of us.

First, we will be hosting a meet on Thursday against Farmington, and it will only be us two schools, so it should be a quick meet. This is a class day, so we will be setting up for the meet during the class. All class members will be required to stay until the end of the meet and help clean up, as part of your grade for the class. Check canvas  in the coming days for the assignment details. (This will happen again on Thursday 4/15, so prepare yourselves accordingly).

Not everyone will be competing in our home meet, which will primarily be for our JV runners. The Taylorsville invitational on Saturday will be for our varsity runners, and is a pretty much all day thing, depending on the events you are in. (The following week is the Davis Invitational, which will be even more difficult to qualify for, so we will have an even smaller group). Talk to your event coach/es to get an idea of if you will be competing at Taylorsville. If you absolutely cannot be to the meet on Saturday, please let me know Monday at practice so I can make sure not to enter you (we are charged per entry and prefer not to have money go to waste, if you can believe it). Please see the following link for meet information, order of events, and spectator information (tickets need to be purchased online for spectators). Taylorsville Invite Info

It is my understanding that we will be tested again for Covid-19 on Thursday and the usual time and place. I will let you know if that is NOT the case, but plan on it for now.

If you were not tested on the Thursday before Spring Break, you cannot practice until you get tested. I will not be entering anyone into Taylorsville who hasn't been tested by practice on Tuesday - otherwise you will have missed too many practices to compete. Info on make up tests can be found at the end.

If you haven't joined the "remind" class, please do so at the following link: track 2021 remind

Thanks,

Coach Jacobson

3/21 update

Braves,

We had another great week at the races up at Box Elder, and by a few who went down to St. George. We had new school records and all-time list marks. If you would like to see the performance list, or the seasonal best of each person on the team, which I try to update each week, please visit www.bravestrack.blogspot.com, where you can also see the all-time lists.

With two meets under our belt, we have had a ton of PRs, which is exciting because we have the heart of the season waiting for us after spring break. This is our final week prior to spring break, so make sure that you are there each day to get yourself ready for a strong month of April, which will set us up for region and State. On the note of state, we have been informed, due to the complexity of using the BYU facility for the state meet, and BYU’s own uncertainty on what May will hold, the UHSAA has decided to move the state meet to Davis High School. The days have also changed and will be on 5/18 and 5/19. How this changes the rest of our schedule remains to be seen, and I will update you when I know. If you have an AP test on one of those days, you would benefit by looking in to taking it on a later date (every test has back up test dates for this very reason). The same goes for all meets in May.

This week we are headed to Syracuse for the Davis District Championships. The meet will be on both Wednesday and Thursday, and the order of events is attached here. Because this is a state qualifying meet, we are limited on the number of entries that we can make, so not everyone will be able to compete. However, even if you aren’t entered into the meet, as a member of the team I would like everyone to come support their teammates while they compete and help make it fun for everyone.

When it comes to limited entries, and relays in the future, we will make sure that we put our TEAM in the best possible position, and sometimes that means that people are left out of certain events that they were hoping for and working hard to be in. I understand that that can be difficult, and I know from personal experience as an athlete how tough that can be. I, and our coaching staff, will make these decisions in good faith to best help the team. Please remember that your value and worth to the team is not measured in how fast you run, how high you jump, how far you throw, how many events you’re in, or how many state titles you win, but rather in how great of a teammate you are and how committed you are to being the best you can. As the great Pat Summit said, “Winning isn’t the point... Never giving up is the point… The secret of the game is in doing your best, to persist and endure.” Winning, or reaching goals, is a byproduct of doing your best, persisting, and enduring. If you fall short of a goal that doesn’t mean you failed, and it isn’t even the point. If you did the best you know how, that is what is rewarding about this whole thing. I agree with Pat when she says that winning isn’t the goal, and I believe that the outcome rarely is the point, but rather the point is in the process you take to reach whatever goal you set. If you do your best to reach whatever that goal is, then you’ve succeeded, regardless of the outcome. Can you honestly say that you did the best you knew how? If so, then you were successful; if not, then learn from it and do the best you can in the next thing you do.

Lastly, a reminder that if you would like to order a shirt, hoodie, or mask, to please pay and submit your form in the office by tomorrow before practice. Parents/guardians are of course welcome to order things as well. I’ve attached a form here if you need one.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

2021 Outdoor Track Meeting

Outdoor Track Meeting

Braves (Student-Athletes and Parents/Guardians),

If you are receiving this email it is because you student has signed up to participate in outdoor track this season. I was excited to see so many at our first day of practice yesterday and look forward to a great season with some great kids. If you are receiving this in error, please let me know and I can remove you from the list. I will use this email list to send out updates and reminders.

Please view our website for information from the initial meeting, the meet schedule, and the link to register my athlete. www.bravestrack.blogspot.com

Here are a few things you need to know in the short term as we get started.

We will have a time trial on Friday at 1 PM to get our season started. Our first meet is on March 11th at Box Elder, (bus departure time tbd). In order to compete in that meet (and all the others) there are several things you MUST do to be allowed on the bus.

  • Be covid tested on Thursday at 1 PM in the fieldhouse.
    • The state mandates that all participating in extracurricular activities must be tested once every two weeks. These tests will be offered at the school. Those who miss the tests cannot participate in afterschool activities, including practices and meets, until after they are tested again. There are options to do a “make-up” test, which I can send out as needed, but again, in the meantime you will not be able to participate in after school activities.
    • If you have not been tested at the school before, then you need to fill out the parent permission form and bring it to testing. This only needs to be done once. I have attached that form here.
  • Complete register my athlete https://www.registermyathlete.com/login/ for track and field. If you participated in a sport earlier this school year, then you should log in using the account you made previously and you just need to go click on track and field and complete the process. If you have an account but this is your first sport this year, just log in and complete the registration process. If this is your first time, create a new account and complete the registration process.
    • In order to complete registration, you need a physical. You CANNOT compete until this is done. Other sports won’t even allow kids to try-out without first having a physical, but because we don’t have try-outs our date is extended to the first meet.
    • If you are unable to get an appointment with your own physician to get the physical, there are a number of places that typically have allowed walk ins, so you can look those up if needed. They do however incur a cost greater than going through your own insurance.

On Fridays, when we do not have school, we will practice at 1 PM. Make sure you have all your work done with your teachers before coming to practice. Do not tell a teacher that you can’t meet with them or come in due to track practice. That isn’t true.

That is it for now, but I’m sure there will be something that I missed. Feel free to email me with any questions.

3.       Team Philosophy

a.       TEAM

i.   Your value to the team will be measured by how good of a teammate you are, not how great of an athlete you are.

ii. A great teammate is reliable, dependable, supportive, encouraging, driven, positive, consistent etc.

A great teammate finds joy in others’ success, pushes their teammates to work harder by encouraging and challenging them, and constantly seeks to improve themselves as a teammate and athlete.

b.       Enjoy the journey

i.   The season looks like it won’t be over for a long time (it ends two weeks before school does), but it will end quicker than it seems.

4.       Expectations

a.       Be here ready to get better every day; missing practices = missing meets

b.       Multi-sport athletes

i.   If you participate in multiple sports and have organized team activities in those sports, come talk to me ASAP and we will see how we can work with your schedule so you can participate in both.

5.       Logistics

a.       PRACTICE

i.   Monday/Wednesday at 2:40 in the South West Bleachers

ii. Tuesday/Thursday:

1.       Those with the class 1:10 in the South West Bleachers

2.       Those without the class: ASAP after school so you can hop in the workout (2:30s)

iii.  In case of a snow covered track then we will meet in the commons

iv.  Come dressed to work out – prepare for bad weather

1.       If you have injuries come to practice and we will have you talk to the trainer/cross train

b.       Meets

i.   If you miss practice, or leave early, don’t expect to compete at the meets; meets are the reward of hard work

ii.  Event changes

1.       Utah has decided to do away with the medley relay, and instead has opted for the 4x200m AND 4x800m relays.

c.       School Fees

i.   $90 in the office for track fees (These are fees the district mandates).

1/4 update

 Braves,

If you are receiving this email it is because your student-athlete signed up for indoor track at Bountiful High. We are looking forward to a great couple of months, and rest of the school year. We have had two practices thus far and I am excited about the group of kids that we have, who seem eager to work hard and bring a positive attitude. Can’t wait to see what the season holds.

There is a lot of information here, so please read it through.

As could be predicted, all of the indoor track meets have been cancelled. What this means for us is that we will be practicing and training with an eye towards the outdoor season, which begins at the end of February. We will also try to schedule a few days for time-trials to gauge and measure progress. The cost for the off-season training is $50 and can be paid in the office for indoor track. We will do a clothing order in the coming days.

With the strange year we are having, we are adjusting our training schedule – which will only be on Mondays/Wednesdays until outdoor track begins. We will meet both of those days at 2:40 in the commons area. Please bring a mask, which you will be required to wear except while running.

Although we are only practicing 2 days after school, we will have a track class during 8th period starting second semester, which is two weeks from now. That class begins at 1 PM, and will give you an opportunity to train another two days a week with the team. Once the outdoor season starts, it will give you two days to get home earlier to get to everything else you need to do. It will also allow you to miss less school once track meets begin, which will commonly be on Thursdays (B-Days). I highly encourage all who can to get into the track class. Email your counselor and they will help you arrange your schedule – do that ASAP.

Lastly, it was previously understood that because we are not in season that we would not have to be tested for COVID-19 every two weeks. However, new guidance instructs all student-athletes who are training during the off season to get tested as well. This means that if you wish to participate during this off-season conditioning that you must get tested. At the end of this email you will see the testing dates. I’ve also attached a consent form to be tested. Those who do not consent cannot participate in practices. We will be taking roll each day, as directed. Bring the filled-out and signed form to the testing on either January 7th. Testing is done in the balcony of the fieldhouse. Beginning at noon, but more directions will be given for that.
