1/1 update

Braves,

I hope you have been having a great winter break. The days always seem to fly by when we are out of school. We are lucky that our season begins right after the break so we can jump right back in to things; that seems to help cure the holiday hangover for me. When I think about our team I realize how lucky we are that you are a great group of kids and we are happy to be working with you. We have a lot of kids who sincerely want to get better, and we have a very coachable group. Keep up the great work.  I have several things to share with you before we resume regular practices on Tuesday to help you be ready for next week’s meet.

This past week we held two practices, and the attendance was as expected considering many of you were out of town or had other commitments. If you fall in that category, we understand. Nobody died from the early morning workouts, but everyone there got stronger. Unfortunately many stayed at home in bed and got softer. Now I’m not trying to make you feel guilty, and again, I realize many of you simply couldn’t come – and many of you emailed me to tell me that, which I appreciate. What I am trying to do is illustrate a point. The point is that to get better and become your best self takes work. If we want to become region and state champions, it is going to take work. For years I have heard fellow coaches lament that “everyone wants to be the best, but few are willing to put in the work for it.” We have to take advantage of each day and we can’t let small things get in our way. Rather than finding reasons to avoid working, let’s find reasons to work harder.  It is that concept that makes track fun. Seeing your teammates work hard makes you work harder in return, and that is what makes this whole process enjoyable. Regardless where you are now, or how many practices you have been to thus far, I invite each of you, myself included, to think of one way you can work harder each day at practice – and then of course, do it. Let’s start fresh in the new year and get ready to work. If we each do that we will be able to reach our goals of competing for region and state titles in May.

As I said before the break, we have put ourselves in a good position heading into January, but we have only just begun, there are many months ahead of us. Take it one day at a time, one practice at a time, one race at a time and you will be surprised what you are able to accomplish, I have no doubt of that.

Our first meet is next Friday and Saturday at BYU. I will do my best to answer all your questions here, but if I miss anything feel free to send me an email.
1)      You need to register for the meet online. Click here to register. Remember, we will register for the relays so don’t worry about doing that.

2)      Remember that indoor track is a club sport, which means the district will not provide us with transportation. Each of you is responsible to get yourself to and from the meet. Technically as coaches we are not even allowed to facilitate carpooling because of liability issues. If you have space in your vehicle feel free to share that information with your teammates. Here is a map to the facility.

3)      Friday night is when the field events are competed, namely High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put, and Weight Throw. If you are competing in one of those events you can head down after school. Refer to the schedule to get an idea of when things are competed. Scroll to the bottom to see those estimates.

4)      Saturday is when all the track events are done. There is not a an exact time schedule, but on the BYU website you can see what time races in the past have gone. I imagine it will be similar this year.

5)      We recommend registering for at least two events (that ends up being $10). We also recommend running the 4x1lap at the end of the day IN ADDITION to your other events. Please let me know by THURSDAY if you are able to stay until the end and are interested in a relay and we will sign you up and pay for those. We are hoping to have a bunch of teams. The relay is one of the best parts of the day. Few things are better than running with your teammates on a relay.  (The reason it is called 4x1lap is because the BYU track is ~321m around, so they simplify the relay and it is a bit shorter than usual.)
We want you to run these three or more events for several reasons. One of those reasons is that we are early in the season and still are trying to build a base for the remainder of the year. Competing in more races will help you build up your stamina and strength. We are not trying to run our best race of the year next week, we are trying to do that in May. Running more races now will help you get there. Many of you are going to be competing is several events, on back to back days, over the course of the indoor season (State indoor and Simplot), and outdoor season (district, region, and state). If we don’t do multiple races now, we won’t be prepared for it.

6) Talk to your coaches about what events you should run. (Sprinters/Hurdlers, I’m going to recommend the 400m so be prepared.)

7)      Upon arrival to the facility you will need to check in to your race by highlighting your name (or whatever they ask you to do this year) on a table near the “bullpen”. If you walk into the main area you will eventually find it. We will be there to find you and direct you as well. There will be areas where you can warm up, but make sure you know which races are before your so you can go to the bullpen in time. the bullpen is where they give you a heat and lane assignment, and you might be in the bullpen for a while, like 30 minutes if you are one of the last heats, so plan accordingly. I will clarify this further at practice on Tuesday.

8)      There are bleachers in the facility but they aren’t very conducive to relaxing, so we will find a spot as a team where we can sit together and support your teammates who are racing.

9)      This meet has a tendency to be longer than some of the other local meets. Last year the relay finished at about 5 PM.
a.       With that in mind please bring plenty of food and drinks so that you are well nourished and hydrated for your races. You will be much happier if you are well fed (speaking from personal experience) so I recommend having an abundance.
b.      I also recommend bring something to sit on like a chair or blanket, and maybe a pillow if you are the type that naps between races (as long as you are awake with plenty of time to warm up of course).
c.       If you want you can bring some games to help pass the time between races.
d.      Support your teammates when they are racing. It surprises me how often kids say that they started running faster when they heard a teammate yell for them. Support each other and enjoy the day together. This season is short so let’s appreciate each day and race.
e.      Prepare yourself mentally and physically for your race. Give yourself plenty of time to warm up and be in the bullpen.

We appreciate your hard work. We are on our way to getting better. I have put the links at the end here as well for those who may have missed the hyperlinks above.

12/25 update

Braves,

We want to thank you for your effort, attitude, and determination that you have shown thus far in the season. We have been off to a solid start, which will be important to our success. Coming back from the break we have to continue what we started.

Make sure that you are staying active over the next two weeks, meaning going out and getting some a run in everyday that you can. On that note, we will be practicing on Wednesday and Friday of next week at 8 AM. We will meet by the back doors on the 3rd floor. We are also going to be practicing field events those days.

There are some of you on this email list who have not come to practice for some time. I can remove you from the list if you would like, but I need you to let me know. If you haven’t been coming to practice but have some interested in joining us again, feel free to come back to practice; we’d love to have you.

Feel free to contact me with any questions, or refer to our website www.bravestrack.blogspot.com

I hope you all have a merry Christmas and happy holidays. Enjoy your time away from school, be in the moment, and get some well-deserved rest. We are grateful for each of you and your contribution to the team. We are looking forward to a fun indoor season with a good group of kids.

12/18 update

Braves,

This was only our third week of practice, but it was by far our best in terms of commitment, effort, and overall improvement. Though we are early in the season, we are absolutely on the right track to becoming a successful team this winter and spring. We have two practices before the break, two practices (maybe a third if we can figure out a day) and then 4 school days before the BYU meet. The season is here and the days are going to go fast. As I repeat almost daily, we need to take advantage of every opportunity because there aren’t many. We had a stellar week, let’s build on that this upcoming week and over the break.

In regards to the break, we will not be practicing after Tuesday of this week. We will have two practices after Christmas on Wednesday and Friday at 8 AM. For those two practices we will meet at the east doors near the field house that lead to the 3rd floor commons. I will try and lay it out a bit more clearly here:
Monday 12/19 – Practice after school as usual
Tuesday 12/20 – Practice after school as usual
Wednesday 12/21 – No Practice (school is shorter as well)
Wednesday 12/28 – Practice at 8 AM
Friday 12/30 – Practice at 8 AM

We encourage you to stay active over the break. Going for a run each morning would be a great way to maintain what we have started here. If you don’t do anything over the break you could lose the gains we have made thus far.

Again, our first meet is the first week back in school. For questions about the schedule please see our website, and feel free to contact me. The link to our schedule is here http://bravestrack.blogspot.com/p/2017-indoor-schedule.html

The way that BYU does their meet registration is slightly different from the others. This is the one meet where you will need to register yourself online in the events you want to compete in – registration doesn’t end until January 6th at noon so you have some time, but we want you to be thinking about it. We will sign up and pay for the relays, so we will be asking who is able to run in them. The track at BYU is unique in that it is about 322 meters around (which makes it five laps for a mile). They do all the standard indoor events except the relay. Instead of being a 4x400m, it is a 4x1Lap relay (meaning 4x322m relay). We would like to put several teams together and get out and compete against each other. This meet is longer than the others as well because of the amount of teams that go down, so I would look at the schedule and make sure to arrive an hour and fifteen minutes prior to your race time. This will allow you to warm up and be in the bull-pen, which is where they organize the heat and lane assignments, with enough time. We encourage you to sign up for AT LEAST two events, not counting the relay, so that we get used to competing several times a day. Talk to your coaches about which events you should register for. When you register they will ask you to select your school (Bountiful HS) and then to pay online. BYU is a bit pricier than the other venues, and they tack on a transaction fee, so it comes out to $10 for two events. Here is the link for that registration http://www.runnercard.com/e/runner.Main?meet=1000938 More information will be given out in the coming weeks.

Again, we are very happy with where we are at as a team. We have a group of kids who are ready to work hard and do what we ask of them. I said this in practice this week but I will share it again here. Each of you has your own reasons for joining the team. I don’t necessarily care why you decided to join the team, I care why you stay on the team. We hope you stay so you can become a better athlete. We hope you stay so you can help your teammates become better as well. And we hope you stay so you can be part of what we are building at Bountiful High. There are other reasons to stay on the team of course, but these reasons need to be at the top for our team to truly be successful.

We appreciate the work you have been putting in, let’s keep it going into next week and build successful days on successful days. Enjoy your weekend, Braves.

12/11 update

Braves,

We have had a solid week and a half of training to begin the season, and we only have a week and couple days before the break. You are off to a great start with your effort in practices. Moving forward we need to take advantage of every opportunity and moment of practice because the first week back from the break we have a race. Over the break we will have a few practices that are not required. Those practices won’t be during any of the days from the 23rd to the 27th, but we don’t know the exact days yet. I will let you know in the email I send out next week. We also will not practice on the last day of school before the break, which is Wednesday and a short class day.

We have been pleased with how consistent many of you have been at coming to practice, and we appreciate those of you who have communicated with us when you are going to miss days for other commitments. Please continue to let us know that you are going to miss so we can plan accordingly. A number of you have been missing workouts without telling us beforehand, so we are left wondering why. Do all you can to not miss practices; we don’t have many to waste before the season begins. We are in a very talented region so for us to have a chance at winning this spring we need to be working. Every team who is in contention is doing the same thing right now. You don’t have to be the fastest or the most talented to work hard. Remember the Tim Notke quote, “hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.” As coaches we would much prefer work with a group of kids who lack talent but work hard than work with an extremely talented group who doesn’t.  With only a few days left before we race, now is the time to rededicate yourself and take your effort to the next level.

On this last Friday we had pretty tough workouts and we were impressed how hard each of you were working. That isn’t to say we don’t have room for improvement, because we do, but the work you are doing is setting you up for success; keep it up. As evidence for the effort I took a few pictures and I put them on our team Instagram (@bravestrackandxc) and our team website where I will upload photos all season long. You can find those pictures by clicking on the pictures link on the right side of the page. If you have pictures from meets or anything you will also be able to upload them there via the google page. It’s quite simple and is nice to have those memories from the season when you want to see them. Our website is www.bravestrack.blogspot.com

If you have any questions feel free to contact me. I know many of you are new to the sport so I’m happy to answer any and all questions. As the meets begin I will do my best to be thorough in the information that I send out, but I won’t be perfect, so let me know.

We are off to a good start, let’s keep it rolling.

12/4 update

Braves,

I am extremely late in getting this out so I apologize for that. I hope you all have been enjoying your weekend and that you are ready to get after it this week in practice.

We were pleased with how many of you came to the first week of practice, and how hard you were willing to work. Don’t lose the excitement or determination that you had those first few days. It is easy to be good or determined for one day or one practice, the way that you become a successful athlete or person is by being good day after day, week after week. We must stack successful practices on top of each other so that we have successful weeks and months. We are only weeks away from our first meet. To those who are new to the sport maybe that sounds like a long time, but for cross country we practice for two months before our first race – and in college we practiced for 4 months before racing – so this seems like an extremely short time for preparation.

The good thing about indoor is that it is a perfect time of preparation for the seasons ahead; we aren’t winning region or state in January or February. Those races aren’t until May, so we use this time to get better, and improve ourselves. One thing that we want each of you to do is compete with yourselves and avoid comparing yourselves to others. On the one hand it is good to push and be pushed by your teammates, but never let someone else’s ability discourage you. It’s ok if you aren’t the fastest on the team, as long as you are working your hardest, then you are successful and you need not compare yourself.

Keep working hard like you did this week. Get to know your teammates and encourage each other when the workouts get difficult (consider that a foreshadow for this week, don’t stress though because you will be just fine). Plan on being outside at least a few days this week. With some snow in the forecast we are changing up our plans so that we can take advantage of the good weather days. Make sure you come with clothes in case we are inside or outside.

As said at practice, if you ever want to leave bags or other items in my room during practice you are welcome to do so. I don’t lock my door so you can leave it or get it at will. .

We will see you tomorrow. Same time and place as usual. You are awesome.

Indoor Track Update

Braves,

Our first indoor track meeting will be held on Tuesday 11/29 after school. The flyer can be seen after this post as well as a preview for the clothes we will order. I wanted to answer a few commonly asked questions.

First, our boys team has an excellent shot at repeating as region champs and our girls team has a chance to win as well. It all depends on how hard we work, and the indoor months will be crucial for that.

Practice is everyday after school and will typically end before 5, and often earlier. I know some of you have conflicts with other sports, jobs, or other extra curricular activities. If you communicate those conflicts with me we can make it work.

We will talk about the rest at the meeting.

Contact me with any questions in room 101 or via email bjacobson@dsdmail.net

5/22 update

Braves,

It is always about the journey, not the destination.

Going in to the state meet Coach Magalei and I scored the boys side of the meet to see how it was projected to play out, based on the seedings of each team and individual.  We were projected to get 30 points. That would be good enough for 8th place. We worked our entries to see where we could max our points out, with relays and other individual events and we figured we might be able to get over 40. We hoped that would put us in play for 2nd. Our boys ended up scoring 54 points- finishing in 3rd, 4 points out of 2nd. The team overachieved by 24 points. That really is an incredible feat; I've never seen anything like it. A combination of clutch performances and PRs got them that far, but in reality they earned that finish each day at practice. On the girls side we had some great performances, and that young team earned some valuable experience.

The boys had to massively overachieve to get where they were. For example, Tre improved by nearly 10 feet in the disc, and Nate improved by several feet as well to get 10 points where we were projected less than 5. On the girls side Lovely added a 5th place finish in the disc as well. All three of them are in the top-10 all-time at Bountiful High. It's not like they magically made those throws at state. Everyday I'd walk up to the track around 2:35 and they were already out at the discus ring getting ready to roll. You know who is least surprised by their results? Marv. He saw their work and knew what they could do; they earned it long before the state meet. Max threw a 2 feet PR in the shot to get 2nd when he was ranked around 8th. He came back to finish 3rd in the javelin, just ahead of his 4x100 teammate Noah, who was 4th. Max didn't just bomb a 52 foot throw at state because it was state. He was in the ring day after day working on that spin, throwing the shot out of our sector. Everyday on the field I had to be careful not to get speared by Max or Noah who spent countless hours with Dave throwing the jav. Without the time they put in all year these results don't happen. Lovely tossed a huge 2 foot PR in the shot put as well, and won the whole competition on her first throw. She could have left then and still won it. She is State Champ. She is a dedicated worker and is notorious for staying late to practice the shot put with her dad after everyone is long gone. In fact, when I first was started here at Bountiful, my wife and I came to the track last summer to get a look at the facility. Lovely was up there throwing the shot. I didn't know her at the time, but I knew that she was going to be special, if she was out perfecting her craft 11 months before the state championship. That sure paid off. Kristalynn finished 7th in the 100H after being ranked 9th headed in to finals. Afterwards she told me she also finished 7th as a sophomore. It would have been easy for her to have felt negatively about such a result, but she looked for the positive. What an awesome example of what this sport and team are about. She has worked so hard this year, and has been a model of coach-ability. Anytime I asked her to do something she was happy to do it. When I would give her instruction she was quick to follow it. Then there is Bridger who finished with a pair of 2nd places in the hurdles to get 16 points, while being a critical piece of the 4x100 making finals which was not projected to make it. And seriously, 2nd in the 110H!?!? I mean who first begins running the 110H as a senior and then finishes 2nd at state, .2s behind the winner, with the 4th fastest time ever at Bountiful High? And then in the 300H he goes from a 41 last year to a 38.58 this year, 2nd all-time at BHS. People don't just go from a 41 to a 38 that doesn't happen. Bridger put in work beginning during indoor last December to accomplish what he did. That is a testament to his athleticism, commitment, and hard work.

Though we have a lot of seniors graduating, we have a very promising group returning next year. Our entire 4x100 graduates this year: Max, Bridger, Marsaylis, and Noah (Marsaylis also jumped and ran the medley). But every other member of the relays this year, both boys and girls, is back for next year. They all gained some valuable experience at the state meet. Our boys medley made it to finals, being carried by 2 sophomores, Dallin and Blake, who did the longest legs - not to discount Mars' and Kohle's (who is a jr.) contribution - they put the team in great position headed into the 400m leg. Our girls 4x100 of Maia, Julia, Rachel, and Jazmin made it to finals as well running a top ten time ever at BHS.

The point I hope is being expressed here is that our kids performed unbelievably well this past weekend, but it isn't the result that made this season, but the road we went down. No matter what place we finished, the season was a success because of the journey we took. We compete to be the best we can and we shoot for high goals in order to help us reach our potential, which inevitably takes us on another journey. I hope we always remember that it is about the journey, not the destination, and it is what we do on the journey that makes the destination worth it. To get 3rd for the boys shows how much work they have put in all year. I could not have asked for a better first year here at BHS. I'm going to miss those kids who graduate this year, and I'm so happy to have the rest of you returning for next year. We had fun this season. We have some great kids; not just as athletes but as people. It is you that makes my job so rewarding, so thank you for being you.

There is so much more to be said on the matter, but I will save that for our team BBQ and awards, which will be this Thursday after school at the amphitheater (behind the weight room).  We will be handing out lettering certificates as well as some team awards, so I hope everyone who was on the team makes it out.

Now that track is over we turn our attention to the summer sports. My wife Caitlin and I will be the cross country coaches this summer and fall. We are extremely excited to coach this group, and the new kids coming up. We hope to have as many kids come out as possible. All of you who are on the track team now, and aren't doing football, soccer, or another school sport this summer/fall we want you to come out for cross country. We are going to have a fun year. You sprinters/hurdlers should come out as well, it will help give you a base for next track season.

Our first meeting will be Thursday directly after the BBQ. The meeting will only be about 30 minutes. If there is enough interest we will also watch MacFarland USA after the meeting in the auditorium if possible, or in my classroom. The movie is legit. You'll love it. Invite your friends and everyone to come, it does not matter how fast of a runner they are. That's why we train, to get faster, not to show who is fast and who isn't.

Lastly, because XC (cross country- in case it was unclear) is a new season, I will start fresh with my email list. So if you or your child is interested in doing XC, please respond to this email indicating as much, so I can include you in next season's email group. I will send one more reminder out this week about the team BBQ to this group then I will start the next one.

Thanks Braves.

5/15 update

Braves,

What a week. Our boys came home with a region title and our girls finished 4th - both had some incredible performances and inspiring effort. After a recap - which will be incomplete because there is no way I can highlight each event - there will be some announcements concerning the upcoming week.

I don't even know where to start. We knew going in that the Box Elder girls team would most likely win, they just have too deep of a team. We knew our boys would win if they performed like we knew they could. Our throwers had some big time performances, going 1, 2, 8 in the boys discus. Nate, Tre, and Garrison scored a 19 points in that event alone. Lovely had a 7 foot personal improvement to finish 2nd in the discus, after winning the shot put with a throw of 40 feet, while wearing converses. Max won the shot as well with a PR throw of 48 feet and Tre finished 4th. The Javelin was huge for the boys as they went 1, 4, 5, 6 - Max, Noah, Kohle, and Kekoa. Earlier in the day Kekoa asked me how far he would need to throw to score at Region. He through nearly 20 feet further than that. On the girls side McKenly qualified for state by finishing 4th and Danielle finished 6th. That is 30 points in one event. The work these javelin throwers have been putting in with Coach Munk has really been paying off.

On the track side of things after the first day in the standings the boys were a little behind, but that quickly changed when Bridger ran the 4th fastest time in school history in the 110H with a time of 14.92, followed by Adam in 3rd and Ben in 5th. Kristalynn and Rachel finished 3rd and 4th in the 100H - scoring 31 points together. Our girls 4x100 had to have a 4th place finish or better in order to qualify for state, and they battled all the way to the line to secure the 4th place finish. It was the first of 3 relays they would qualify that day. AK, Mason, and Newbold went and scored some big points in the 400. AK jogged the final 70 meters hoping to save some energy for his 200 and still won, with Dallin and Kohle finishing 5th and 6th. Dallin and Kohle were only running the 400 for the 3rd or 4th time this year, and to finish the way they did, and they go back in the medley was super impressive.

Bridger followed up his 110H win by running the 100m about 4 minutes later well enough to get on the podium, but he was clearly unsatisfied by the his time. He turned around and won the 300 hurdles by over a second, showing once again why he has the 2nd fastest time in the entire state of Utah. Jeremy ran a tough race to finish 4th and qualify for state, with Adam right behind in 5th. Rachel finished 3rd in the the 300H. Blake has now run his last 3 800m races finishing within half a second. That is not easy to do. He finished with a 2:00 flat once again, and is poised for an improvement. Track is so full of ups and downs that when you have consistency like that, you know you are set up for a big jump. He ran a tough race finishing just behind a field of seniors and juniors. That's going to be his field next year.

It was around this time that things got crazy. Our girls medley needed a 4th place finish to make it to state. The teams in our region are very talented, so they had to run well to have a chance at making it. Kristalynn and Kamora ran the 200s well despite a shakey hand off, the Elizabeth ran the 400 with a personal best time. When Amelia got the baton to run the 800 she was in 5th place. It was her time to put the team on her back. She moved reeled in the 4th place girl after about 300m and then started gunning for the 2nd and 3rd place girls. With 200m to go she pulled up along side the 2nd and 3rd place girls. It was unbelievable how much ground she had made up. At that point she had gapped the girl in 5th by so far we were guaranteed a spot at state, but she continued to challenge until the line. Finishing in 4th place (less than 1 second from 2nd) and making it to state was HUGE for our team. And it only got better from there. The boys were in the same situation, needing a 4th place finish. Our 200 runners seriously got out and put us in great position. Newbold ran his season best 400 and handed off to Dallin in second place. Dallin was sort of caught in no man's land, 4 seconds behind the first place runner, and another 4 seconds in front of the next group. That is probably the toughest place to run an 800. He ran extremely tough - both he and Kohle just finished a tough 400 final beforehand - and finished 2nd, well ahead of the 3rd place runner. Those kids showed some serious desire to qualify for state in that race.

At this point the boys had already clinched the region title, but that doesn't stop anyone who has worked as hard as they have. The boys 200m finshed with a 1, 2, 6. AK won it, Bridger came back in his 8th race in two days to edge a Box Elder kid at the line by .01. He was behind the whole race but his competitive edge kept him from pulling up, and his lean was the difference.

With so many awesome races in one day, it is impossible to say one was the best, but the girls 4x400 may have defined the season up to this point. Again, they needed a 4th place finish to qualify for state, and there are some crazy relay teams in the region. I knew we had a shot, but it wouldn't take much for us to miss it considering the competition. Julia started it off and ran her best time of the year, finishing very strong. Victoria took the baton and the girls around her just took off on the turn. Coming off the turn she was in fifth. There is a point in most races where I decide I can't watch anymore because I am too nervous. I looked away and walked toward the finish line ready to get her split, mumbling under my breath, "let's go Vic, just get her (Amelia) in a good spot." By the time I looked up Victoria was in the midst of splitting 3 different girls and moving into first place. It was unbelievable and she just ran by these kids. Her run left me speechless as Amelia took the baton. Still in first off the turn, the girls behind her were closing fast. Amelia had just run her fastest 800m to date, and went staggering off the turf with fatigue. Most people sit back after that race and watch the 4x400 thinking to themselves how grateful they are to not have to run anymore, because they just ran an 800. Amelia is not most people. The girls were closing on her hoping to go around her before the turn, but Amelia held them off. I'm thinking to myself, I hope she can finish strong and keep us in good position. I was NOT expecting her to gap those girls and leave them behind, but that's exactly what she did. She turned on the burners and left 'em. I was left wide eyed looking around to see if anyone else was seeing what I was seeing. Rachel got the baton in first, Box Elder was in second, and their anchor leg is one of the best runners in the state, not just the region. Though Rachel had the lead, Box Elder's plan was to close the gap on the backside then make it a race for the final 200. Rachel came around the turn and I yelled to her that she was going to be challenged and that it was her time. Now if you have ever seen Rachel run, you may not think that she is also a graceful dancer, because of how aggressively she runs - it's a skill that cannot be taught, and the parity is a testament to her athleticism. As soon as I said that to her, she put her head down - which she does when she is ready to roll and it moves slightly back and forth because of how hard she is throwing her arms - and took off. Sure enough the Box Elder girl closed the gap, and they were side by side with 100m to go. Just as her teammates had before her, she left her behind.

That was a pretty special race. It was a pretty incredible day. Our multiple event winners included: AK, who won the 200, 400, and finished 5th in the 100. Tooley, who won the shot put and the javelin. And Bridger, who won the 110H, the 300H, finished 6th in the 100, and 2nd in the 200m. The 31 points he scored earned him MVP of the meet.

As much as I would love to feel sentimental right now about the journey of this season, there is one more week to go. The state championships are on Friday and Saturday this week. There is also a jv region meet on Tuesday. If you are not qualified for state, please email me the events you would like to run on Tuesday. If you are qualified for the meet, you will need to talk to event coach to see if you should run anything on Tuesday. Most likely you will not, but there are a few relay runners who will be running Tuesday. This week is going to go fast, and the practices will be short, but crucial. Be there on time and ready to roll.

Let's make this last week together a special one, and let's work hard. Remember to enjoy your teammates' company, because the season is over after this week. I'm proud of this group, not just for the finishes at region, but for the overall commitment and dedication shown. We've worked hard this season, let's make the last week the best one.

5/8 update

Braves,

Two weeks. That is all that is left in this season. I can't believe that we are already to region week. We had a meet at East on Thursday then we spent a couple days that felt like weeks at BYU.

Thursday was a good success for those who went and competed. We were able to see some pleasant surprises that will help us determine the region entries this upcoming week. It was nice to see so many out and running hard, particularly in the 400. On Friday down at BYU we had over 4 hours of lightening delays. It was brutal for our 110 hurdlers and 100m runners. Bridger and Adam went out there twice, after hours of delay, only to get called back in. Considering the challenges that come with warming up and re warming up several times, they performed very well. Max placed 3rd in the Jav with a throw of 191, Lovely was 5th in the shot, and Julia was 6th in the long jump. Rachel had a nice PR (she's 7th all time at BHS) despite running in the morning and hurdling with her off leg most of the way. Bridger had a PR in the 110H despite the delays. Losee had a very impressive PR in the discus with a throw of 139-02.75 (good for 7th all time). Blake ran an awesome 800 going 2 flat (11th all time) for the second week in a row, which shows great consistency (a key to success in track and field). Coach Munk stayed the night in provo and got to the stadium before 7 so that he could get us a good spot. They ended up misplacing our team packet so he couldn't get in, which was very frustrating, so when you see him be sure to thank him for being there to help us out to make sure we were in a good spot to support and compete. This meet is incredibly difficult to place in because of the sheer numbers of athletes and schools. They score across classifications which makes it even more difficult. This meet was very successful and showed that we can compete with the best. Headed into region we have some great things to look forward to.

The region meet is on Wednesday and Thursday. These next two days will be very important as we tune up for region. There is a large number of athletes who are entered and who have a shot at making finals and scoring, who aren't necessarily favored to make finals. Prepare yourself mentally and physically to "over achieve" - so to speak - to help the team. The meet will be at WX and begins around 3. They limit our number of entries for the meet, so those of you who do not make it into the region meet this week will be entered into the JV region meet next week. There is at least one more meet for everyone. Let's make sure prepare this week to be ready for these last meets.

All team members have been invited to Mrs. Ludwig's room on Monday during lunch for a free lunch. Her room is on the 4th floor at the south end. I'm not exactly sure what will be served, but it's something the officers like to put on for teams headed into region championships. Come and hang out with some free food tomorrow.

The Utah State Championships will be Friday and Saturday of next week. Everyone who hits the state qualifying standard or finishes in the top 4 of their event at the region championships this week, will be able to compete at the state meet. We will be finalizing entries tomorrow morning and will let you know what you will be running. We will need the relay alternates at the meet, even if they aren't entered in anything else.

I tend to get sentimental at the end of the season as the seniors run their final high school races. This is a good opportunity for me to remember to enjoy the journey. This season has been a journey, mostly through the rain, and now the best two weeks of the year are upon us.

The time is now; take advantage of it.

5/1

Braves,

Thank you to all of you who were there to help at the Junior High meet on Thursday. Those meets can be difficult but with your help it went pretty smoothly. The meet on Friday at Woods Cross was also very successful with several new state qualifying times. I would talk more about the meet at wx, but I wasn't there. We are in a very good position moving into the Championship season. This week coming up we have a meet at East on Thursday, then the BYU Invitational on Friday Saturday. BYU limits our entries so it will be a small group going there. It is all day both days, sort of a State preview. We will decide where to enter you and get back to you. The meet on Thursday is the last day to get a mark to compete at the Region Championships, which are NEXT WEEK. Can't believe how quickly the season has gone.

With only a week until region and two until state, we have to make the most of this week. We have to take advantage of each day and make it productive and successful. This is the funnest time of year in my opinion. Let's enjoy this journey.

I sent the clothing order in. As previously said it will probably take a couple weeks to get it back - just like the last one. As soon as it is in I will let you know.

Lastly, I would have loved to have been at the meet on Friday, but we had some pressing family matters to attend. My wife Caitlin went into labor and delivered our son, Jack, who is doing great. He came out weighing 9 lbs 2 oz. Even though he is huge, Caitlin is doing great. She's up walking around doing stuff like nothing happened. I have to keep telling her to rest and relax (something my athletes probably haven't ever heard me say).

Thanks for all you do. Let's get some work done this week before Region.

4/24 update

Braves,

As track season often goes, we had excellent weather everyday this week up until our invitational on Saturday. As frustrating as that can be, in many instances we were able to rise above the challenges of the weather and make the best of the opportunity we had. More on that to come.

We hosted a meet on Thursday that I thought went very well. I loved at the end of the meet how many of you stepped up and ran a 4x400 relay. That shows me who is buying in to the team concept and is understanding that hard work builds success. Remember, success isn't about titles or being the best, it's about hard work each day, and improving. If you don't improve every week you shouldn't feel like a failure - and improving every week is not practical in high variable races - but it should motivate you to continue to work hard. Progression in track often comes with PRs followed by a plateau. Don't be discouraged by a plateau in improvement, but remember that you are due for a break out.

The Davis invite this year was one for the books. So many crazy things happened. It was super windy to begin the day which took its toll on the early races (I apologize if I leave things out). Our girls 4x100 ran well in the wind and just missed state qualifying. Our boys 4x100 also were running well with a chance at the school record with the intense rain, but because of the rain we missed our final exchange and were disqualified. Max Tooley won the open shot put with a 47 foot throw. Lovely was second in the discus, Tre was also second in the discus, and Bridger was 3rd in the 110H. The weather in the afternoon session only got worse. The athletes battled some pretty crazy rain, wind, and cold. After watching Julia in the invited long jump I was walking across the field and I saw Bridger before his 300H. He looked at me, smiled, and said "I'm gonna win this." That race was stacked with talent. It basically was the 5A state championship final preview, plus Bridger and James (from Bonneville). I simply nodded with hope and pride. At that moment I was most proud of how he was determined to race well even though it was pouring rain. The way he talked and his body language almost made me think it was a balmy day. That is the kind of mental toughness that is needed in this sport, and in life. He decided he was going to compete and succeed. He did not let the rain negatively affect his his approach to the race. With 80m to go Bridger was in 3rd. It was then that Marv said "he's got em." Sure enough as they both stated with certainty, Bridger won it. He didn't win that race with 80m to go, he won it before hand. He won it at practice. He won it in his preparation. He won it with his approach on race day. He had to execute his race in order to put himself in a position to win, and he did just that. His time of 38.90 is second all time at BHS. I recapped his race hoping that you all will leave more determined to be mentally tough in the face of adversity, and to put the work in day in and day out.

This coming week is supposed to be rainy everyday. Let's determine to work hard even if we get rained on. On Thursday we have a Junior High Meet we will be hosting. We will need all of you there to help. We will take roll that day. It would be very tempting for you to say that you will simply skip that day, but these JH meets are important days for us to help our team in the future. Hopefully you all feel invested in the success for the program after the work you've put into it. JH kids think you guys are awesome, which you are, so we need you there to help those kids have a more positive experience; even if it is raining.

The second clothing order is due on Wednesday if you want to order something. Simply bring the form with a receipt to me in my room, or put it in my box.

On Friday we will be competing at Woods Cross. It is an afternoon meet and we will give you details on who is competing and what time you are excused. It is an invitational so not everyone will be able to compete, but we will enter as many of you as we can.

Finally, as many of you know my sweet wife, and future XC assistant this summer and fall, is pregnant and was due this past Friday. If I am mysteriously gone a few days in the next week or so, you know why.

Thanks for all you do. Only a few weeks until region so let's take advantage of each day we have.

4/10 update

Braves,

Attached are the results for the district championships this week. Our performance list is also on the team website. The meet was awesome. We had so many good performances that I left the meet feeling very positive about our team. Just like every meet, there were some ups and downs, and not everybody was totally happy with their performance, but as a team we performed very well. One thing that I strongly believe in is being happy about good performances, but not satisfied. We left the meet happy, but with an understanding that we have a long way to go. One of the things that this meet showed us is that we have a chance - on both the guys and girls sides - to win region. Both teams can walk away with trophies at region this year, and that is our goal. That is something that hasn't been done in about 15 years. Let's keep working for it this year!

There are so many highlights from the meet it will be difficult to mention them all. Both Boys and Girls finished 4th behind Davis, Syracuse, and Viewmont, but ahead of three other 5A teams and Woods Cross. Here are SOME of the highlights.

AK won the 100 and 200, and qualified for state in the process, while bringing home the MVP of the meet. Max Tooley won the Jav and was a member of our 3rd place 4x100 along with Houston, Mars, and Noah - who also placed in the Jav. Max's throw of 190 feet in the jav won him the performance of the meet. Bridger Salazar was 3rd in both the 100m and the 110H - in back to back races - and then turned around and won 300H leaving a pack of Davis kids in his wake. His 22 points were the most by any one athlete at the meet. Marsaylis had a ridiculous jump of 20-6 in the long jump placing him on the all time list. Several others placed and did very well. Go check out our website to see how the all-time list at Bountiful got shaken up this week.

On the girls side Lovely got the win in the shot put. Julia followed that up with an insane jump of 16-10 in the long jump, giving the sophomore second place at the meet, but number 4 all time at Bountiful High. Jazmin started us off right on day two of the meet by dominating her run off to get into finals. Those events are a ton of fun and really inspire a team. Her race gave our team a TON of momentum and got us going on the right foot. Rachel finished the 100H 4th and then came back to win the 300H with a dramatic come from behind win over the final 40 meters. Rachel (1st), Christy (3rd), and Julia (8th) represented BHS in the 300H final and were the most of any one school in the race. Their 17 points in one event was huge for the team. That race at region is going to be something else if these girls keep improving like they have. Each of them had a PR of over two seconds in that race alone. Our 4x100 finished 3rd with Christy, Kristalynn, Victoria, and Jazmin. They had an awesome race. Each member of that team played an important role in the meet, more than the one race. Victoria and Kristalynn and both just missed finals in one of their individual events, but came back positive and gave our team a lift. Amelia Tew had a PR in the medley 800 to get us 5th, and our 4x400 also finished 5th.

I apologize for not being able to mention everyone in the recap. There were so many good moments.

As we look towards region and state we must continue to work and improve each day.  On both the boys and girls sides we have 9 athletes qualified in 12 events for state. Each meet that number increases. Our hope is that we fill the bus going to state with how many athletes that qualify by time or by place at the region meet.

This coming week will be our last without an invitational. We have a meet on Thursday at East High.  All who are eligible will be able to compete. Talk to your event coaches about what events you should do.

I love coaching. You guys make it so much fun to be around and are great to work with. We appreciate your dedication to improve and the hard work you put in each day. Keep it up.

4/3 update

Braves,

I hope you all an a wonderful spring break and were able to rest where needed and also able to continue to train, considering the meet that we have this Tuesday and Wednesday @ Syracuse - the district championships. Tomorrow's practice is going to be crucial for us to set up relays and fine tune some things before Tuesday's trials.

We had a group of 15-25 kids everyday during the break who were there and working hard. We got some quality work in on the track and the hills. The weather was lousy all week but as a group we still got better. I was extremely impressed with their commitment and effort each day. Now that spring break is behind us, and the season is before us, we must be dedicated to improving every single day. Now is the time to show what kind of team we are and what kind of athlete you will be. Let's get after it tomorrow. I've missed practicing with you all, it'll be good to see you.

We will try and enter as many individuals we can for the meet, but we are limited on entries so we will see what we are able to do. We also will run an eligibility form based on 3rd term performance, so some of you may not bee able to compete. We will send out an email tomorrow evening with the list of events you will be competing in. Again, make sure you are there tomorrow as we will be making entries only on those we are sure are able to compete, and we will be preparing for the relays practicing hand-offs and exchanges.

Enjoy your last day of the break, stay positive this coming week even though a long and refreshing break is over. Let me tell ya, it gets better from here.

Contact me with any questions.

3/26 update

Braves,

We had an incredibly busy week. We were at the super meet on Tuesday and Wednesday then up at Box Elder on Thursday. There were many highlights, making it impossible to recount them all but I will mention a few that come to mind.

Marsaylis in the high jump, Noah in the Javelin, and Rachel in the 100 hurdles all broke into the all-time list at Bountiful High with some impressive marks. To see kids make the all time list in March is awesome, and bodes well for rest of the season. Jazmin was someone who stood out this week. We asked her to run a 400 on Thursday even though she had never done it. What was awesome was the way she resonded, simply by saying, "if it's going to help me get better, then I'll do it." That is exactly the attitude we need from everyone on the team. She went out and ran pretty well in the 400 and I have no doubt she'll continue to improve. Blake ran the mile and the medley 800 on Wednesday and improved nearly ten seconds from last week's meet, in both events. That's not easy to do, but he was determined to improve after feeling that last week wasn't his best performance. The way he finished both those races shows he is capable of shaving a few more seconds off right away. As coaches, all we want is for each of you to improve.

We had several state qualifying marks on both the girls and boys side. We want to qualify as many people as we can for state, obviously, so I encourage you to go on our website and find out what the marks are so that you can work to reach them. For some the marks are a long way off from where you currently find yourself - that's OK. The point isn't to qualify or it's a waste, the point is to improve yourself as an athlete, as a student, and a person. By working toward a goal, no matter how far off, it helps you improve. Each of us needs to set smaller goals on the way to a larger goal to help us on the path of improvement. I encourage each of you during this spring break to spend a few minutes setting some goals, small and large, about where you want to be by the end of the season. I've seen many individuals, including myself, who didn't go to state as a sophomore or a junior, but made it there later on in large part because of setting and working towards goals.

It bears repeating that your contribution to this team IS NOT how many titles you win or points you score in a meet. Your contribution to this team is what you bring day in and day out in practice, at the meets, in the classroom, and in your life. If you come each day with an attitude and determination that you're going to work hard and improve, then you are adding something  hugely important to this team. In everything we do we all need to exemplify the attitude that Jazmin said and showed - if it makes me better, then I'll do it. If we all work with that in mind, then this season and team will be a success no matter how many points you score.

Moving forward, I hope you all have an awesome spring break, and are able to recharge your mental batteries for the remainder of the school year. On the track side, we have 8 weeks left in the season. We have the Davis District Championships on Tuesday and Wednesday after spring break. That's our first two day meet with trials and finals, and will be a huge test of our fitness, and will give us an idea of what kind of team we have going forward. In order to be prepared for that meet it is extremely important that you stay active this week.

Those of you who are in town, or will be in town one or more days this coming week, I will be at the track every morning at 10 AM to get a work out in for all who can come. I urge each of you to come if you are in town. Those of you who are out of town, I recommend finding a place where you can workout. Whether it is a treadmill, the streets, or a pool. (Obviously be safe in your choices, I'm not telling you to go run off in Anaheim by yourself if you're headed to Disney Land). All I'm saying is, each day you need to do something that improves your speed and strength so we can be ready for the district championships. If you need specific workout ideas, send me an email and I will send you a few ideas.

We appreciate all you're doing to help our team be successful. We know it is a time commitment, but we also know that it is worth it. The next 8 weeks are going to be so much fun, but there will be ups and downs as we journey through the season together. In the end I hope we resolve to be determined and committed to doing what it takes. If it makes us better, we'll do it.

See you Monday to those of you who are in town. Have an excellent break, Braves.

3/20 update

Braves,

As a whole we worked hard this week even with a couple of days of bad weather. In general I was very impressed with the effort that was given during the meet on Thursday. We appreciate all the help that was given to make it run smoothly. With our small track it can be difficult to be efficient but you helped it go well, so thank you. This meet was not about times and performances but about how hard we worked in our races. There were a large number of kids who did a bunch of events, and continued to get after it no matter the circumstances. Our Friday practice was small in numbers but we had fun mixing up the workouts to get some cardio while playing some games. Between the dance this weekend and it being a Friday there were many people who missed without having let me or other coaches know. I encourage those of you who did not do very many events or missed on Friday, and could have done more, to rededicate yourselves this coming week. The early weeks of the season are where we can improve our fitness and speed, and it is so important to get after it in these small meets.

This upcoming week is very busy. We the super meet on Tuesday and Wednesday at Davis High, then a meet at Box Elder on Thursday. We will not practice next Friday given that there is no school. The meet on Tuesday is girls only and Wednesday boys only and they are by invitation only. We can only take a few athletes of each event on T/W, but Thrusday we can take all who are eligible. Each meet this week is going to be a great opportunity for us to improve and see where we are now headed into spring break. We will let those athletes know who is going to the Davis super meet by Monday evening (I know it is not a lot of notice but that is the earliest we can finalize the entries).

Attached to this email is a form for  a clothing order. The clothing option is explained on the form. Feel free to select all, some, or none of the products. Any athlete (or parent) who wants something needs to return the form to me by Wednesday 3/22. They will also need to pay for this in the office and bring the receipt to me. Let me know if you have any questions about the items.

Last item: each day I am impressed by different athletes on our team and the work that they put in. Specifically, Friday’s practice was daunting for some coming back from Thursday tired and sore, yet there they were ready to work. The distance group in particular was on the track getting after it. I was impressed by how many came ready to work on a day where it would have been easy to justify in your mind to not work hard. Thursday I was impressed by the number of individuals who kept entering events and were out on the track at the end running a 4x400 as their 4th event of the day. Noah set a new PR in a 400 by nearly 4 seconds as his last event. Marsaylis was worried about a medley 400, but went out and improved on his time from minutes before in the open. He showed another level of fitness when he went and ran a solid 200 a few minutes later.  Rachel anchored our 4x400 team which was full of girls running their 4th event and afterwards looked like she wanted to race them all again. Amelia ran an 800 and then a 400 within an hour- that is one of the most difficult things to do. Some would call that crazy but it’s exactly the attitude and heart that we are trying to build on our team. There are many more examples, and we will see even more throughout the year. May we all give the kind of effort that we can be proud of at the end of each day and at the end of the season. We are building this team together; let’s keep it going.
